R. Kelly has been attacked in his Illinois jail cell by a fellow inmate and his attorneys want him released.
The incident happened inside the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Chicago, where he is being held after pleading not guilty to dozens of states and federal sex crime charges in Illinois, Minnesota, and New York.
Attorneys for R. Kelly said he was attacked by another inmate, and they are calling for his release.
Doug Anton, an attorney for R Kelly, told CNN that the singer’s legal team had been advised by the US Attorney’s Office that the singer was on his bed in his cell Tuesday at Chicago’s Metropolitan Correctional Center when another inmate came in and started to punch him.
Federal law enforcement sources told TMZ that the inmate attacked R.Kelly because he was angry about the detention facility being placed on lockdown on different occasions due to the singer’s protesters outside the jail.
Guards at the federal facility stopped the assault almost immediately, according to Anton. Anton said that Kelly did not sustain any injuries and that X-rays did not reveal any fractures.
